Supporting Military Family Members

Loved ones returning from military service often find themselves struggling with the transition back to civilian life. Returning home is a process, and it will take time to develop a “new normal” for both the veteran and their loved ones. As a family member, you can help them feel understood and encouraged by providing support in the following ways.

Hold open conversations

Veterans may be hesitant to share their challenges, so create a safe space for open dialogue. Start small by asking about their day or how they’re feeling without pressing too much for details. Let them lead the pace of the conversation and show you’re there for them unconditionally.

Normalize therapy as strength

Many veterans worry that seeking therapy implies weakness, but you can help to reframe this perception. Let them know that talking to a therapist is similar to seeking help for a physical injury — there’s no shame in asking for help. Remind them that the military offers free, confidential support to both service members and their families. Knowing that mental health resources are there without judgment may help to ease their apprehensions.

Find family support groups

Family support groups offer an environment where you can share experiences, gain coping strategies and feel less alone. Resources such as MilitaryOneSource can help families find connections to local and virtual support groups.

Involve your whole family

Establish routines that everyone can join, like weekly family dinners, game nights or outdoor activities. These traditions can foster a sense of connection and belonging, making it easier for your veteran to feel engaged without feeling the pressure to solve everything on their own.
