Neurodiversity for Parents & Guardians:
Know the Signs

Does your child seem to process things differently than others? Maybe they’re struggling to focus in school, feeling overwhelmed by sensory input, or exhibiting behaviors that don’t align with typical developmental milestones. You’re not alone — approximately one in five children in the U.S. are estimated to fall within the neurodiverse spectrum, encompassing conditions like attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), autism, dyslexia and more (Understood). Neurodiversity is a reflection of an individual’s unique way of experiencing the world. Recognizing the signs early can help you provide your child with the resources they need to thrive.

Indicators of neurodivergence
Pay attention to recurring challenges like difficulty concentrating, managing emotions or adapting to change. Signs of neurodivergence vary from individual to individual, but some common ones include the following:

  • Difficulty with social interaction
  • Difficulty with communication
  • Processing sensory information
  • Issues with focus and concentration
  • Intense interest in a particular topic or activity
  • Repetitive behaviors or routines
  • Difficulty following instructions

Seeking support
Open a dialogue with your child’s teachers about their needs. Schools can offer tools like individualized education plans (IEPs) or classroom accommodations to foster success. Talk to your pediatrician or school counselor about an evaluation. A diagnosis doesn’t label your child — it unlocks tailored support for their learning and development.

Tap into available resources
As a parent, you don’t have to navigate this journey alone. Many employers offer Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs) that connect you with resources like child development specialists or counselors to guide discussions with educators. Take advantage of these tools. They’re designed to make your life easier. Understanding your child’s neurodiversity is about embracing how they see the world. By accommodating your child’s needs and recognizing their strengths, they will thrive.
