Get to know SDoH 🚗

Mind Matters

with Shawna Sielert, LPC

The environment that surrounds us, or what we call social determinants of health (SDoH), have a major impact on our well-being and can shape our lives well beyond genetics.

If a mom struggling to make ends meet skips meals to give provide for her kids, it will affect her nutrition and energy. If an older person doesn’t go to doctor’s appointments because they can’t drive, their symptoms will worsen. If a young boy is raised in a culture where strength is highly valued, he isn’t likely to speak up about his health for fear of being seen as weak.

These are all people impacted by SDoH, which are unique and highly personal to their life experiences. The first step in overcoming these barriers is to understand which may be preventing us from getting the right care.

Shawna Sielert, a licensed professional counselor at Lucet, shares her tips on how you can get informed and start a conversation about your own SDoH.
